Author #1

This study and presentation proposal is based on my dissertation research, at the time, findings presented will be preliminary. The PhD student handbook suggests that the public presentation of the research happen during the Community of Scholars Day.

Abstract

This session explores the preliminary results of a design based research study aimed to understand how the implementation of specific curricular interventions using phoneography impact students’ development of visual literacy in high school photography courses. The curricular interventions were designed based on the needs of the art teachers at the site schools, and focused on engaging students with contemporary photographic themes through collaborative critical analysis and creation of photographic images. This session will begin with an overview of design based research methodology, and the theoretical underpinnings of the study to provide a contextual foundation upon which the curricular interventions used in the study were designed. The researcher will then explain in detail how the pedagogical tools were designed, and share examples of how these tools and techniques were implemented in high school photography classrooms. A description of the data collection methods will be provided and preliminary analysis of findings will be shared. Participant work samples will be showcased as the researcher explains how the images were interpreted using a specific assessment tool aimed to measure the impact of the curricular intervention on visual literacy skills.
