Abstract
What is Arts Based Research? Through these 5 different projects, the audience will learn about different types of arts-based research approaches that focus on the arts, education, and social sciences. We used creative process and various art modalities to research the human experience. These 5 projects are closely relate to each researcher’s own community-based interests, involvements, and experiences.
Amanda’s project called “Crafting Collective Memory: Using Objects and Storytelling to Make Meaning of Passed Down Remembrances.” This research investigates the value of using a creative relationship with objects to construct meaning by interpreting, through the art making process, memories as they are passed down.
Yamel’s project called “Exploring Cultural Identity through Poetry.” This research uses poetry as an Art-Based Research. The author connects with twelve participants from Mexico, United States, China and France participants constructing a poem that reflects her own cultural identity.
Meaghan’s project called “Collaging Connection to Place: An Autoethnographic Study in Place-based Identity and Community.” An arts-based ethnographic study using collage to explore personal connections to place, an understanding of identity, and in turn how these relationships create space for community building and empowerment.
Julie’s project called “An exploration of life narratives of Veterans.” This research project employs video-poetry to show the commonalities between narrative biographies of Veterans at the end of life and explore false perceptions about this population.
Katina’s project called “Dance As Healing: An Empowerment Tool For Emotional And Physical Wellness.” This research aims to explore the connection between movement and attitudes towards one’s perception of their health.
