Proposal Title
The Lack of Intersectionality in Public Schools
Abstract
Intersectionality can be described as the relationship among multiple dimensions of social relationships. This is a category for analysis currently in public education. I am a transitional bilingual education teacher for first graders in the Worcester Public Schools, teaching all lessons in Spanish. Throughout my experience in both public and private schools, I have seen partial stories of complex students. In a time like the present, public education needs to ask: what is learning and can that question be answered for the same student in the same way? "...I want to argue that oppression can also result from who we allow students to be"(Kumashiro, Kevin 2015). In this presentation, research about intersectionality and students in the public education system will be presented. The outcomes will prove that intersectionality can be used to improve education for all students.
