Proposal Title
Client Profile Case Study: A Theory-Informed Methodology for Cultural Competence Training
Abstract
This workshop is for educators who would like to explore the use of case study methods in the teaching of cultural competence courses. The methodology was developed in the teaching of Examining Power, Privilege & Oppression in Clinical Practice, offered in the Expressive Therapies Division of GSASS. The methodology is informed by the multicultural counseling competencies framework, case study method, and experiential learning theory; and, incorporates the creative arts as model and reflective practice. The creation of a Client Profile assists students in conceptualizing the various topics presented in the class, imagining themselves in therapeutic relationship with these clients, and addressing, confronting, and engaging with the issues they may face in cross-cultural counseling. The Client Profile Case Study is an integrated methodology that offers students a semester-long engagement with one case in all its complexity. It allows students to develop and practice introductory skills for working with clients who are culturally different in more than just visible racial/ethnic categories, and beyond a laundry list of identities, to understanding and working with the complexities of the multi-dimensional/intersectional client. Participants in this workshop will hear briefly about the theoretical underpinnings of the methodology, and engage in an experiential highlighting the methodology in practice.
