Abstract

The current study examined the impact of dance/movement therapy (DMT) on students’ social-emotional learning (SEL) and academic success. Previous research shows a correlation between SEL and academic success, between DMT and SEL, and between DMT and academic success. As an English teacher and dance/movement therapist, the researcher of the current study is interested in exploring the integration of social-emotional learning and dance/movement therapy techniques in English language curriculum for an after-school class. This thesis outlines the six after-school lessons for a class of Secondary Four students. The results of the methods as facilitated with the class are discussed. By using the nonjudgmental approach, students were found to have better emotional awareness and to be willing to engage in creative writing tasks after circle games and non-verbal movement activities.
