Abstract
This research explores the possibilities, through literature and the experience of others, that the physical body is the container for “something” often referred to as the soul or ethereal substance which lives beyond the body after death. My work examines the intersection of science and spirituality related to conversations and writings about the afterlife. This investigation was conducted relying on the findings and the beliefs/opinions of ancient and modern philosophers, scientists and spiritual leaders’ concepts of death and the possibility that other worlds (or dimensions) exist. Despite many centuries of exploration, there is no conclusive scientific evidence of an afterlife; however, many religions and spiritual theorists believe that human beings, and possibly other living things, possess a soul, and that there is a place where the soul or spirit goes after the physical body dies. This research utilizes data from a survey of the beliefs of contemporary individuals, and an analysis of the literature related to the afterlife and history of ancient civilizations—(primarily the Egyptians). I include scientific research articles and YouTube video interviews of patients who have had near death experiences, and the scientific comparison of the concept of randomness versus determinism to add to the readers’ knowledge base and, at the same time, open up new questions for discussion. This work concludes with the awareness that to know is not to know.
