Proposal Title

Text Sets and the Drive to Discover

Abstract

Text sets are more than just a great set of resources. A well-curated text set, comprised of high-quality, engaging children’s nonfiction, fiction, and poetry and real-world texts of all genres and modalities, creates a pathway through material and content. When texts are intentionally sequenced and juxtaposed with one another, students and teachers discover different ways of seeing and explaining the world around them. Text sets support curriculum that allows teachers and students to ask and answer important questions and create their own unique texts in response to their learning. Teachers who work with text sets find that they can meet curriculum standards and foster engagement and inquiry through reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and making.

Our text set approach allows for teachers to engage in deep inquiry with students, support overall literacy development and the acquisition of content and genre knowledge, while remaining student-centered. Students need this kind of learning experience, and teachers need the opportunity to reclaim the curiosity and excitement that brought them into the classroom in the first place.

In our pluralistic society, it is more important than ever to both recognize diversity and to foster respect and appreciation for diversity. When students experience an array of texts related to the same topic, theme, or question, they begin to recognize that texts, as constructed objects, are not neutral - they represent the author’s worldview / ideology. This recognition that there are multiple perspectives rather than fixed truths, is essential for democracy - text sets can prompt deep thinking far more effectively than a textbook or any single text. Come join us as we share stories and examples of teachers and students engaged with this work, and learn about the ways in which text sets are more than just a great set of resources.
