Proposal Title

Intersections in Accessibility

Abstract

Cassidy Donahue, a senior Expressive Arts Therapy major, will present on a research paper she wrote for a final. The paper discusses the intersections between disabilities, identity (specifically LGBTQ+ identities), and mental health. The paper also de-bunks myths that people have about the intersections between them, and discusses the rare occasions in which those specific identities are talked about together, why that matters, and what that means to people who are constantly left out of the conversation. As someone who experiences all of those identities, she finds this research especially important, particularly to those who may not have any knowledge on the topic. She also goes on to discuss how this impacts her work as a student leader (President of CAB and Senior Peer Advisor), and what she is doing to ensure she is making things as accessible as she can for every single person who may come to an event/come to her for advising. Cassidy is also working on publishing the paper.

Sarah Gimmi, a junior Special Education and English major, is also a research assistant for Janet Sauer, a professor here at Lesley. Together, they are conducting research on UDL’s and accessibility in higher ed, specifically here at Lesley.

Josh Baldwin (PhD), an Associate Professor and Division Co-Chair here at Lesley, will be presenting on his experiences in the field of Social Work and teaching college students about the importance of intersectionality, and why these conversations are so imperative.
