Proposal Title

Creating connections within oneself and others through Expressive Flamenco.

Abstract

Expressive Flamenco© theory and praxis will be presented in this experiential workshop where you will be guided in its applied practices to connect with your authentic self. The goal is to express our true essence while finding inner peace and joy during this enlivening process, both within oneself and in solidarity with others. Expressive Flamenco© is a concept and applied practice being researched at Lesley University as a holistic healing tool in expressive arts therapy. This ongoing arts based qualitative research aims to explore a broader applications of flamenco (an art form born out of profound emotions within a specific cultural context) which facilitates a process of holistic healing. With this work, we aim to stretch traditional flamenco aesthetics into new applied health territories. The applied practice of flamenco when combined with other expressive arts can have therapeutic benefits including but not limited to psycho-social, spiritual, and aesthetic connections to the individual's unconscious allowing authentic truth to be “expressed”. During these experiences of arts based emotional expression, one can transcend into divine connection with their authentic self and what the authors understand as “duende”. The duende is a spirit of evocation, born from within the self, which only appears when the soul connects with and is in creative conversation with the unconscious. The authors hypothesize it is the emergence of the duende that facilitates an epistemological process of self-knowledge and an emotional process of catharsis, suggesting that when this art form is utilized as “expressive flamenco” it helps facilitate holistic healing. Therefore, this research aims to stretch flamenco into new applied therapeutic practice territories, specifically in the arts therapies because within the applied practice of expressive flamenco, one experiences multiple emotions which have psycho-somatic therapeutic benefits.
