Abstract
This thesis uses the lens of transformative learning theory to explore the features and processes observed in art therapy, as no unique framework currently exists. The literature explores the tenets of transformative learning theory, person-centered therapy, and present documentation of the art therapy process. The study observes the art therapy process with three clients at a private therapy practice over the course of four months. The research has three main findings: 1) shared facets of art therapy and transformative learning, 2) transformative learning phases observed in art therapy, and 3) unique qualities of the art therapy process. The findings demonstrate observable parallels between the processes of art therapy and transformative learning. It concludes with limitations of the research and implications for future studies on processes unique to art therapy.
