Proposal Title
Arts Based Research: A showcase of 3 different types of research projects
Abstract
This panel discussion focuses on arts-based research as practiced in the arts, education, and other social sciences. We discuss this using via the creative process and various arts modalities that are employed to research the human experience. Specifically, we see how middle school students from different races and cultures participated in projects to learn about each other’s interests and experiences, and how the students, teachers, and societies became better interconnected as a result. Christine’s project, “Where I’m From: Culture, Heritage, and Identity Development,” explains how seventh and eighth grade students in a creative writing class explore the enormous depths of their own identities through poetry. Students were engaged in community building circle discussions, remembrance activities, poetry analysis, and reflective writing in order to build a poetic narrative about what makes them who they are today. Kelly’s project, “Kids Living with Serious Illnesses: Inpatient Self Portraiture and Self Identity, discusses how being diagnosed with a serious illness abruptly changes a person’s life path. She illustrates the challenges of maintaining resilience and sense of self through an intensive treatment process, especially for children who are still forming their sense of self. The project demonstrates how arts-based projects may help boost children’s self-esteem when in such situations. Stephanie’s project, “The Importance of Self Expression Through Music,” asks the following questions: How can music help self-expression and boost self- confidence? Does music help people develop empathy towards others? How does music help students heal from painful experiences? How can music provide a place of belonging?
